Weddington History

With fertile farmland as a major draw, the Weddington area was originally settled by immigrants from Germany, England, Wales, and Scotland in the late 18th century.  Eventually it became a part of a militia district, providing troops for the Mexican War in 1846, and the American Civil War from 1861 through 1865.

For over a century, through the 1970’s, farming was the main economic staple of the town, and shortly thereafter increased growth meant that farmland gave way to housing developments and the building of more roads.  More recently the locals dedicated time and energy into preserving their past, while ensuring the comfortable, hometown feel was conserved.  These proceedings turned into an agreement to have the Town of Weddington incorporated in 1983.  Weddington North Carolina was named after one of the Weddington area’s initial settlers who had great influence upon the town.
