Mount Holly History

Settlements began in the Mount Holly area in 1750 after land grants were issued.  By 1860 the first railroad was built through the area causing a bit of growth.  In 1875 after the opening of the first cotton mill, Mount Holly’s time of expansion and growth continued.  That cotton mill is the oldest surviving mill which is still standing today.  As the mill succeeded and prosperity ensued, the City of Mount Holly NC was incorporated in 1879.

To this day, the textile industry remains a significant source of economic capital, and many manufacturing companies have their plants and headquarters within the City of Mount Holly.
