Harrisburg History

The Town of Harrisburg NC was settled in the mid 1700’s by Scotch-Irish settlers and when the railroad came through in 1850 it was named for the family from whom the land for the depot station was purchased.  Shortly thereafter, a business district which centered on the railroad stop sprang up, but by the 1920’s the downtown Harrisburg area moved to the new road which went through town.  The Harrisburg community was finally incorporated as a town in 1973.

Harrisburg community is a close-knit group of people who place pride in working hard and with quality results.  In recent years the business sector has flourished with the building of an industrial park.  To this day Harrisburg Town maintains its rural heritage, keeping an one eye on the history of Harrisburg while ensuring economic and residential growth are properly accommodated with little impact to open spaces of land.  There are also many Harrisburg historic site restoration projects which have been completed throughout the city, ensuring that the Harrisburg history provided in these buildings stays evident for years to come.
