Fort Mill History

The Fort Mill area is steeped in Fort Mill history which began with the Catawba Indians who inhabited the area, and which are the only recognized Native American tribe within South Carolina.  By the 1750’s Scots-Irish settlers began to develop the Town of Fort Mill North Carolina with the principle means of economy being in the creation of textiles.  When the textile industry waned, economic growth continued due to the town’s proximity to Charlotte.

The history of Fort Mill continues and the region is known as one where slaves fought on the Confederate side of the American Civil War.  In 1865, Fort Mill was also the location of the final Confederate Government Cabinet meeting.  Named for an important colonial-era fort which was built by the British in the Fort Mill area, the Town of Fort Mill NC was officially established in 1873 and has known tremendous growth since that time.
